PULLING AT THE WEEDS

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Ryan Horio has been serving the unhoused community since he came to UCLA through mutual aid initiatives in Little Tokyo. As External Vice President of Bruin Shelter, he ran a shelter for college students experiencing housing insecurity. He understands the consequences of rising rent costs and unlawful evictions, which is why he will fight to protect working-class families by regulating rent costs and creating affordable housing initiatives. Ryan will ensure that families and students will have someone in their corner against abusive housing policies and landlords.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Ryan Horio is a leader in advocating for healthier communities through environmental sustainability. With air pollution levels rising and climate change unfolding at an impossible rate, Ryan will be at the forefront of conversations on implementing greener spaces and improving public transportation to protect our current communities and safeguard the communities in our future.

UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE

Ryan Horio is the son of a refugee and understands how hard it is to navigate the health care system in our country, especially if one doesn’t speak English. As Internal Vice President of a UCLA health organization, Ryan’s experiences as a caseworker has taught him the importance of making health care accessible to all. He will center changes to be inclusive, increase affordability, and improve cultural competency. Ryan will strike down predatory health policies that prioritize profit over people.

EDUCATION

Ryan Horio is a future doctor, public health researcher, educator, and community leader. He recognizes the power that education holds and is adamant in supporting those who seek to further their education goals in all fields, including trade and technical schooling. As the undergraduate representative for the UCLA Asian American Studies Department, Ryan also understands the importance of learning about our communities at all education levels. He will work closely with policymakers and schools to increase inclusivity in our history classes so we have accurate representation taught in our classes.

SAFE INFRASTRUCTURE

Ryan Horio believes that the safety of our children, elders, and families is a top priority. We need more safe spaces for pedestrians to walk and bike, for community members to be shaded from unbearably hot days, and for everyone to feel protected. Ryan will work with each city’s urban planning commission and police departments to ensure that the voices and opinions of our community are at the forefront of decisions on public safety.

PREVENTING GUN VIOLENCE

Ryan Horio is committed to keeping our families and community members safe from unlawful gun violence. With the University of Washington’s Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center, Ryan researched the effects of firearm safety workshops and advocated for better accessibility for firearm safety devices alongside community partners and healthcare workers. In the Assembly, he will relentlessly pursue law reforms through red flags and waiting period laws to keep our families safe and to prevent gun violence within our communities.
